Baseball is the most popular sport in America and has been for years. That being said, few popular sports teams have gained the notoriety that the New York Yankees have. The New York Yankees are known for being one of the most popular teams in the world, and they have earned their reputation. Although this popular sports team got a new home in the form of a brand new stadium recently, they still have the same winning attitude that made them one of the most popular teams in baseball.
• The New York Yankees are the still one of the most successful Major League Baseball teams ever. One of the reasons that they are one of the most popular sports teams is that they have won 26 world titles. The Yankees have had many famous Hall of Fame players on their team over the years. They are also responsible for providing America a number of dramatic moments. In fact, as one of the most popular teams in existence, they have fans that have followed them for decades. To many, it is no wonder that the Yankees are one of the most popular teams. The team has been home to baseball legends like Reggie Jackson, Lou Gehrig, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Babe Ruth. Newer legends like Alex Rodriguez, also known as A-Rod and Derek Jeter have helped the Yankees stay one of the most popular sports teams.
• With all of the famous players that this team has had, it is not surprising that one of the most popular teams in history has made headlines for major achievements nearly every year. Many famous things happened to the Yankees, that went down in history as events that people feel could only happen to one of the most popular sports teams in the world. At one point, Reggie Jackson famously hit three home-runs in game six of the 1977 World Series. He even hit each home run on the first pitch, catapulting the Yankees, one of the most popular sports teams even further into the spotlight. Roger Maris was able to break Babe Ruth’s single season home run record in 1961. However, because of the fact that a higher than usual number of 162 games were played that year, it took him more games to set the record than it did Ruth. However, this did not put a damper on this player on one of the most popular sports teams ever. His feat was still entered in the record books, although it had an asterisk next to it.
• One of the most famous moments for the one of the most popular teams in baseball history does not involve an actual baseball game. It involves Lou Gehrig. The star player was only 35 years old in 1939 when he was forced to retire from one of the most popular sports teams in baseball because of the disease that would later be known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. The illness would kill him two years later. However, before his death he was honored in 1939 by the Yankees in a celebration they called Lou Gehrig Day. The famous quote that would forever be connected to the popular sports team declared that he “considered himself to be the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.”
Indeed, the Yankees are not one of the most popular sports teams for no reason. As time passes, many become frustrated that there has not been a championship win in a decade. However, the die hard fans of popular sports teams like the Yankees have no doubt that the team will turn their luck around sooner rather than later.
